Overshot Departures Class (2022)
Pattern: A 4 shaft overshot pattern set by the class instructor (“Ron’s d4”)
Yarns:
- Warp: 147 ends, measured at 5yds + 18in, 8/2 unmercerized cotton (natural)
- Tabby weft:
- Highly variable, and not always tabby!
- Pattern weft:
- Again, highly variable — sometimes cotton, sometimes silk, sometimes wool.
Sett: 16epi
Method: Weaving — multishaft floor loom.
Completed: February 21, 2022.
This was a 2021 Janet Dawson class, that I got off the loom at the very end of 2021, and finished and separated the samples in early 2022. So, it’s technically a 2022 project.
The class was a delightful exploration of all the different treadling systems one can apply to an overshot threaded warp. There were 2 basic tie ups (only), and everything else was achieved by varying the use of tabby picks, order of tabby and pattern picks, what a pattern pick actually meant (flamepoint changes colours based on the block order, not the actual interlacement).
I feel there is so much more to learn…
The setup was to weave page-sized samples for each of the treadling fashions. I captured weaving details, on-loom and after-wet-finishing (front and back) pictures of each of the samples, and then put it all together in a binder:
- Instructions for the treadling system (from the class)
- Printed notes with details and photos
- The actual samples, in a plastic sleeve.
I’m not sure if I’m going to put the binder with my other collections of “samples from classes”, or actually on my bookshelf, as a reference for the different treadling systems!
